What are the pros and cons of short span vs. long span structural systems?
Short span systems serve well for new mixed-use designs where overall building height may be a concern and a shallow floor system is needed. However, due to the greater number of internal columns within the parking module, short span systems result in less internal visibility and reduced flow capacity. In terms of efficiency, short span parking structures range between 340 and 400 square feet per parking stall.
On the other hand, long span systems typically result in greater internal visibility and flow capacity. Efficiency of long span parking structures generally ranges between 320 to 330 square feet per parking space. These structures do not have intermediate columns in the parking module and offer a better level of service for users.
